Clinical Analysis on Patients with Stevens-Johnson Syndrome


Abstract
Clinical analysis was made on ten patients with Stevens-Johnson syndrome who admitted to department of dermatology Chungnam National University Hospital during last three years. The results were as follows:
1. Stevens-Johnson syndrome most commonly occurred in young men age of 15 to 19 (5 cases), and sex ratio of male to female was equal.
2. Cutaneous lesions were observed in all patients. In nine cases the skin lesions were generalized, in one case it was localized.
3. Oral mucous membrane and conjunctival involvements were noticed in all patients.
Urethral involvement was in four cases and genital mucosa was affected in three cases. 4. Constitutional symptoms were common. Fever, headache, malaise, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and dyspnea were commonly appeared.
5. Possible etiologic correlation was observed in six cases. One case was causally
related to contact dermatitis and five cases were associated with drugs. Among this five drug-associated cases were suspected that herb medicine might be implicated in this syndrome.
6. The common abnormal laboratory findings were leucocytosis, elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, albuminuria, pyuria, microscopic hematuria, and elevated serum transaminases.
7. All patients were successfully treated with short term high dose adrenal corticoster¡þoid and other supportive and topical measures without remarkable side effects.
8. Complications occurred in two patients. In one patient pneumonia and corneal ulcer were developed, the other developed pyelonephritis.
